Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Connecticut College forced 35 turnovers and visiting Camels held host Clark University to 24 percent shooting enroute to a convincing 85-34 win in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The win for Connecticut College (1-0) is their second straight against the Cougars for the first time ever in a series that dates back to 1978.
Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) proved to be the best player on the floor for most of the night, finishing with a game-high 18 points, to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Camels, who also had a pair of strong performances from a pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) ended with 11 points, three rebounds and two steals, while Payton Ouimette (Medfield, Mass.) chipped with 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Connecticut College raced out to a 20-7 lead after the first period, using their trips to the charity stripe to buoy their advantage.
Things continued to go in the Camels' favor in the second quarter as well, as they went into halftime ahead 43-15.
Clark's best scoring quarter came in the third where they equaled their first half output with 15 points, highlighted by an Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) three-pointer and a Rachael Chen (Needham, Mass.) inside basket.
Down by as many as 35 in the period, the Scarlet and White got as close as 26 on Sullivan's triple, but Connecticut College answered back with a Willa McKinley (Westport, N.Y.) jumper and a buzzer-beating layup by Malman to push their lead back to 30 after three.
After Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.) drained a three-pointer with 9:36 left in the fourth, Clark would only score one more point the rest of the way – a Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) free throw – as the Camels had their highest scoring quarter of the game (25 points) to move their lead to as many as 51.
Remarkably, despite scoring 85 points, Connecticut College shot just 37 percent from the field, but they did go 27-for-39 from the free throw line. The Camels held a 51-40 edge on the glass – a bulge that helped them outscore the Scarlet and White 23-9 in second chance points.
In the end, however, the turnovers told the story as the Cougars committed 35 that Connecticut College turned into 39 points.
No Clark player reached double figures and they were led by Sullivan, who finished with seven points and five rebounds, while Kerstetter added five points and four rebounds.
The Cougars are off until Tuesday when they visit Worcester-area rival Anna Maria for a 4:00 p.m. start, while Connecticut College hosts Rutgers-Newark in their home opener tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m.
