Cold Start Dooms Cougars, 67-51

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) pumped in a game-high 25 points to lead visiting Coast Guard to a 67-51 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Monday night at the Kneller Athletic Center.

The win for the Bears (3-2) is their fourth straight and fifth in the last six meetings with the Cougars, who are now 2-4 overall.

Coast Guard opened the game by outscoring the Scarlet and White 19-3 in the first quarter, while holding the hosts to just 1-for-15 shooting in the first ten minutes.

Clark's best period was the second, where they outscored the Bears, 17-12, trimming an early 20 point deficit to nine following a Dominique St. Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.) steal and Rachael Chen (Needham, Mass.) jumper to make the score 29-20, before settling for a 31-20 halftime score.

Turning Point:
Fornaro, who was saddled with two early fouls, erupted in the second half, scoring 21 straight points for Coast Guard, including all 16 in a pivotal third quarter. In fact, she had all but one of the Bears' second half field goals and did it on an extremely efficient 9-for-12 shooting, including a 4-for-7 clip from behind the arc.

Standout Stars:
In addition to Fornaro's stellar outing, the Bears received double figure scoring efforts from both Jill Bray (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Torie Sutherland (Houston, Texas). Bray totaled 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Sutherland, who entered the game as the league's leading rebounder, just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) paced the Clark attack with 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists in a game-high 37 minutes.

Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) came off the bench and was very active, racking up eight points and eight boards in just 21 minutes and Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.) and Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) each chipped in with eight points as well.

Inside The Numbers:
The Cougars cold first half shooting carried over to the second and they finished a frigid 29 percent (18-for-61) from the field overall. Coast Guard also controlled the glass, outrebounding Clark, 50-38.

Final Facts:
Clark hurt themselves at the free throw line, going 11-for-22 (50 percent). The Bears, meanwhile, were excellent at sharing the ball as they had 18 assists attached to their 22 baskets.

Series Notes:
Today's matchup is the 31st all-time meeting between the two teams. Despite the loss, Clark still holds an 18-13 edge in the series that dates back to 1998-99 season.

Next On The Docket:
The Cougars continue their three-game homestand with a Wednesday night affair against NEWMAC rival MIT (2-2). Coast Guard, meanwhile, visits fellow conference foe Smith College on Wednesday as well. Both games tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
