Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fla. – Playing on their final day in central Florida, Clark University swept a doubleheader with King's College, winning the opener 7-4 before taking the nightcap, 6-5, at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.
With the two wins, the Cougars improve to 3-6 during the weeklong stay in the sunshine state that included a cancelled doubleheader due to poor weather conditions.
In the twinbill opener against the Knights, the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the ninth to earn the victory.
After scoring the game's first run on a Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) sacrifice fly in the top of the first, King's scratched three runs across in the bottom of the second off of Clark starting hurler Patrick Robinson (Waterbury, Conn.).
The Cougars got a run closer in the third when Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) drove Jack Kenney (Saco, Maine) home with his own sacrifice fly.
Clark got two more runs home in the sixth on a pair of Knight errors, making the score 4-3.
King's evened the score in the bottom of the sixth when Greg Bartle singled home pinch runner Kris Carr.
The Scarlet and White went ahead in the top of the ninth when pinch runner Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) scored another unearned run on a fielding error. Two more runs came across later in the frame – the first on a Bonicki RBI single and the other on a David Eschen (New York, N.Y.) double to left.
Joseph Gouveia (Nashua, N.H.), who came on in relief in the seventh, was masterful, tossing three innings of one-hit relief while striking out three to earn his first collegiate victory.
At the plate, Bonicki and Eschen each had two hits, while Bonicki added two RBI.
In the nightcap, Bonicki stayed hot, getting three hits and Matt Asdornvuttikrai (Winchester, Mass.) drove in three runs as the Cougars won a nail bitter.
King's took a 3-0 lead off of starter Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) after three innings, getting two in the third – the last on a Bruce Breithaupt double to right field.
Clark wasted little time jumping in front with a five-run third highlighted by a two-run single from Asdornvuttikrai and an RBI single by James Conway (Newburyport, Mass.), who also had two hits in the second game.
The Cougars tacked on another run – which turned out to be the difference – on Asdornvuttikrai's single to left that scored Bonicki in the bottom of the fourth.
King's made it interesting in the seventh, getting two runs off of Dobratz, chasing him after 6.1 innings of work.
Brett O'Keefe (Brighton, Mass.) came in and yielded a single but got a 6-4-3 double play to lock down the win and earn his first-ever save.
Clark returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 14 when they host Elms College in a twinbill slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
