Worcester, Mass. – For the second straight match, Clark University defeated a Worcester-city rival – this time topping Becker College, 7-2, in non-league women's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at the Corash Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Cougars even out their record at 3-3, equaling their win total from a season ago, while the Hawks slip to 3-4 in advance of their noon match on Saturday against Mitchell College.
The Scarlet and White opened up doubles action with a pair of wins beginning with Isabelle Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, Mass.) taking down Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.), 8-1 at No. 1.
Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) and Adrien Horowitz (Arvada, Colo.) teamed up to breeze by Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) and Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.), 8-0 at No. 2.
At No. 3, Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) got Becker on the board with an 8-4 win over Stephanie Gallant (Charlton, Mass.) and Bichtroan Nguyen (Worcester, Mass.).
Singles action was controlled by Clark, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 win by Long over Lord at No. 1 and Amy Fallon (Derby, England) moving past Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) rather easily, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
The Hawks' other victory came at No. 6 where Wodell bested Emma Coppes (Muncy, Pa.), 6-4, 6-2.
Clark returns to action on Saturday with an 11:00 AM start at NEWMAC rival Wellesley College.
