Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Powered by double-doubles from both Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.), Springfield College used a massive edge on the glass enroute to a 57-46 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The Pride held a commanding 51-27 rebounding edge, mostly on the strength of an 18-point, 15-rebound effort from Gins and a 12-point, 11-rebound showing from King.
With the win, Springfield snaps its two-game slide to move to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in league play, while the Cougars have now dropped four straight to slip to 3-14 overall.
Things were knotted at 12-12 at the end of the first quarter and the Scarlet and White were actually ahead 25-19 following a pair of Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) free throws with 2:18 left in the half.
Springfield then embarked on a 14-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the opening three minutes of the third period to take a 33-25 lead.
A layup by Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) and a conventional three-point play from Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.), cut the Pride lead down to three at 33-30 with 6:42 left in the third, but amazingly the Cougars would not score again in the frame. Meanwhile, Springfield got key baskets from Molly McCausland (Millbury, Mass.), King and Gracie Restituyo (Jersey City, N.J.) to push their lead to 39-30 after three.
Clark's scoring drought continued into the fourth and the Pride lead swelled to 13 before Sullivan drained a corner three-pointer to keep Clark within striking distance.
After Georgia Ford (Scarborough, Maine) drilled a triple, the Pride's lead was back at 13 (50-37), but the Scarlet and White made one final push, getting as close as seven following back-to-back Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) hoops, but Springfield made enough of their free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
The Cougars shot just 29 percent from the field, and connected on only 4 of 15 three pointers, while the Pride didn't fare much better hitting shots at a 36 percent clip.
Clark was able to force 22 turnovers and turn them into 18 points, but it was the Pride who used 18 offensive rebounds to collect 12 second chance points.
Sullivan led the Cougar scoring efforts with 11 points and three assists before fouling out, while O'Gara added ten points four rebounds and four steals.
Torieana St. Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.) had seven points and both Dominique St. Pierre (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.) each added six.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday with conference contests. Springfield heads to Wellesley while the Scarlet and White will look to right the ship against WPI.
