Box Score Norton, Mass. – Host Wheaton College took control of the game with a huge second quarter and then closed things out with a dominating fourth quarter en route to a 75-53 win over Clark University in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Emerson Gymnasium.
The Lyons improve to 9-3 overall with the win and are now 2-1 in conference play, while the Cougars see their ledger dip to 2-10 after their ninth consecutive defeat.
Kiley Shoemaker – the league's second-leading scorer – finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting to lead the way for Wheaton, who also got 14 points and seven rebounds from Oppie Morris.
Despite some cold shooting early, the Cougars only found themselves down six after the first, 19-13. Things changed in the second quarter with Shoemaker asserting herself and the Scarlet and White trailed by 14 at the half, 36-22.
Clark was the aggressor in the third frame and it reflected on the scoreboard as they cut their halftime deficit in half, 49-42.
Wheaton wasted little time putting the game away in the fourth, however, as they opened the frame on a 14-0 run and held the Scarlet and White without a basket for the first 5:50 to put the game away.
Neither team shot well, especially from three-point land, going a combined 8-for-44 from behind the arc.
Clark held a 52-42 edge on the glass but were again stung by turnovers, committing 33 miscues – their third contest this season with 30 or more turnovers.
Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) was extremely impressive for the Scarlet and White, finishing with her first career double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds). Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) joined her in double figures with ten points and a career-high seven steals.
Clark returns to the hardwood on Saturday when they play host to Wellesley College in another NEWMAC matchup. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
