Box Score New London, Conn. – Worcester-area native Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) had a career high 32 points and the Bears used a 27-2 run in the third quarter to break open a close game and beat Clark University 75-61 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
With the win Coast Guard improves to 13-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while the Cougars fall to 5-18 on the season and 3-12 in the NEWMAC.
Fornaro, who starred at Shepherd Hill Regional in nearby Charlton, had four rebounds, five assists and six steals to go with her 32 points, becoming the first player in school history with at least 500 field goals, 200 steals and 200 assists.
Clark was led by sophomore Haley Wilder (Rindge, N.H.) who had 12 points, while freshman Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) just missed out on her third straight double-double with ten points and nine rebounds.
The Bears jumped out to a five point lead in the first quarter at 20-15 with Fornaro scoring 11 in the period.
The Cougars climbed right back into the game, taking a three point lead at the 4:17 mark as freshman Kacey Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) took a pass from Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) making the score 26-23.
Coast Guard eventually took a one point lead into the locker room at half with the score, 32-31.
The third quarter was dominated by the Bears as they outscored the Cougars 27-2 run to put the game out of reach, heading into the fourth quarter with a 29 point advantage. Clark was ice cold in the frame, going just 1-for-17 from the field while committing ten of their 22 miscues.
Clark did make the game respectable in the fourth quarter, outscoring Coast Guard by 12 but was not enough as the Bears defeated the Scarlet and White for the fifth straight time.
Coast Guard dominated down low as they outscored the Cougars 40-24 in the paint and outrebounded them 52-43. Meanwhile, the Cougars struggled with their shot, connecting on just 32.4% (22-68) overall and 6-for-24 (25%) from beyond the arc.
O'Gara also just missed out on a double-double, totaling nine points and a season-best nine assists, while Cori Ouellette (Madison, Conn.) made three three-pointers and finished with a career-high nine points as well.
The Cougars will play their final regular season home game on Thursday when they step out of conference with a meeting with Simmons College. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
