Panthers Rally Late To Take Down Cougars, 3-2

Box Score

Worcester, Mass. – Taylor Doyle (Peterborough, N.H.) spun a complete game seven hitter and Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) drove in the game-winning run in the top of the ninth as Plymouth State rallied for a 3-2 win over Clark University in non-league baseball action at a chilly Granger Baseball Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.

The win for the Panthers (6-9) is their first since returning from Florida last week and snaps a brief two-game slide.

For the Cougars, meanwhile, they see their three-game winning streak come to an end as their record levels out at 9-9.

Clark actually took the lead in the second inning when Zach Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) smacked a one-out double to left and then came around to score on a Chris Dibble (Manchester, Conn.) single to right.

Plymouth State wasted little time knotting the score as they got to Cougar starter Cal Slepkow (Rehoboth, Mass.) in the third. Slepkow, who recorded the first seven outs of the game via the strikeout, allowed a two-out walk to Nate Frederick (Worcester, Mass.) and the a triple to right center by Hall that evened the score.

Cougar reliever Mitch Mondro (Westford, Mass.) worked his way out of trouble in the fifth when the Panthers had a runner on third with one out. Mondro, who tossed two innings of no-hit relief, was able to get Frederick to groundout to Richall at third and then get Hall to line out to Tyler Hutchinson (Greene, Maine) in center where he made a fantastic sliding catch to end the inning.

Clark moved back ahead in the sixth when Kyle Bonicki (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled to lead off the sixth and then scored on a bloop double to right by Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.).

As Mondro did in the fifth, Joshua Dobratz (Southington, Conn.) was able to work out of trouble in the seventh. Eric Leitch (Adams, Mass.) opened the frame with a triple to right center. Dobratz got Cam Ruziak (Sterling, Mass.) to groundout to Bonicki at short, then struck out pinch hitter Josh Goulet (Nashua, N.H.) and ended the inning when Frederick also grounded out to short.

Plymouth State was able to get to Dobratz in the eighth when Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) doubled to left with one out. Clark's third reliever – Brett O'Keefe (Brighton, Mass.) – then gave up a double to James Riley-Garnett (Newport, R.I.) that evened the score.

Doyle, meanwhile, was locked in and was in the midst of retiring eight straight batters when he sent down the Scarlet and White in order in the eighth.

The Panthers then went in front in the top of the ninth when Goulet walked and stole second before coming home on Hall's game-winning double.

Clark had the game-tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth when Eglow singled and stole second, but Doyle escaped trouble to secure the victory for the Panthers.

Both Hall and Krajewski each had two hits for Plymouth State, with Hall driving in two runs. For the Cougars, who ended up outhitting the Panthers, 7-6, Bonicki went 3-for-4, while Eglow was 2-for-3.

Clark returns to action on Thursday when they play host to Nichols at 3:30 p.m. Plymouth State wastes little time returning to action as they visit Babson on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
