DARTMOUTH, Mass.- Clark women's tennis got their season started with an 8-0 decision over UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars combined strong performances, with great first-year debuts in a performance to help guide the scarlet and white to their first win of the year.
Coach Gates' Thoughts
"We had hard fought wins at every position and I'm really proud of how everyone played," said interim head coach Anna Gates following the win. "The doubles chemistry was incredible today and it was great to see everyone's hard work pay off."
Doubles
- In No. 1 doubles Clark's team of sophomore Hannah Russo and first-year Leilani Brown proved effective, defeating UMD's Yasemin Kurtis and Jackie Bokis 8-2.
- The Cougars added to their lead at No. 2 doubles, with graduate student Ellie Garfield and junior Andrea Osses Konig coming up with a big 8-3 victory over Alanna O'Connell and Ailey Riddick for the Corsairs.
- The scarlet and white completed their sweep of doubles when No. 3 doubles team, juniors Nardin Sayoufi, and Liliya Georgista, overtook UMD's pairing McKenzie Ferrari and Jordan Beals.
Singles
- Osses Konig gave the Cougars their fourth point with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
- Junior teammate Maeve McEnroe sealed the match for the scarlet and white with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
- Georgista (6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles) and Garfield (6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles) soon brought the Cougars lead to 7-0.
- Russo earned her first career win at No. 1 singles today with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
- Brown played No. 2 singles for the Cougars and was up 6-4, 2-4 when rain caused the match to be called off.
What's Next
The Cougars will look to add to their success next Tuesday when they head to Weston to face Regis. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.
