Women's Basketball's Second Half Surge Comes Up Just Short Against Emerson

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (7-13, 1-7 NEWMAC) fought back to tie the game at 61-61, but fell 68-64 to Emerson (8-12, 4-3 NEWMAC) on Wednesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened

  • Clark took an early 10-8 lead sparked by six points from senior Emily Sifferlen and baskets from graduate student Hannah Favaloro and first-year Megan Swedberg and a Favaloro layup pulled Clark within four at 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.
  • After Emerson pushed the lead to nine, a Sifferlen layup cut the deficit to seven with 7:24 left in the second and Sifferlen netted five more points the rest of the quarter as Emerson took a 38-21 lead into the half.
  • The teams traded baskets over the first 6:46 of the second half with Clark's offense being led by three points from Favaloro and a Swedberg layup made it a 47-31 game before Favaloro scored six straight points and a three-pointer from junior Jalin Waters pulled Clark to within 11 at 53-42 entering the final frame.
  • The Cougars opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run sparked by a Sifferlen triple to make the score 55-49 and a Favaloro free throw brough the Cougars to within five at 57-52 with 7:43 remaining.
  • Clark went on a 5-0 run and held Emerson scoreless for over 3:30 minutes with four more points coming from Sifferlen and a Favaloro free throw pulled the Cougars to within two at 59-57 with 5:17 left in the fourth.
  • Emerson pushed the lead back to four, but two free throws from Favaloro and a layup from sophomore Jacqueline Faulise tied the game at 61-61 with 2:26 to go before Emerson pushed the lead to six and senior Cam Richey hit a three with 0:07 to go to get within three, but Clark fell 68-64.

  • Sifferlen led the way with 26 points, five rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.
  • Favaloro recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
  • Clark grabbed 37 rebounds, dished out 11 assists, and forced 16 turnovers.

What's Next

The Cougars will return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Lesley in their final non-conference contest of the season starting at 1:30 p.m.
