Greensboro, N.C. – Swimming in the first heat of the 500-yard freestyle trials at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship, Melissa Orzechowski (Windsor, Conn.) finished first but her time was not fast enough to qualify for tonight's finals at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Orzechowski turned in a time of 5:04.03 which is the second fastest time in school history – a little more than three seconds off of her own school record of 5:01.84.
Her time in today's event was 32nd of 36 participants with New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Adela Chambers of MIT earning a spot in tonight's consolation final with a time of 4:57.23.
Orzechowski's time was a little more than eight seconds off from earning a spot in those consolation finals.
In all events, the top eight qualifiers earn All-America status, while finishers from nine-16 receive honorable mention All-America accolades.
Orzechowski will be back in action on Thursday mid-morning when she takes part in the 200-yard freestyle time trial.
