Box Score Worcester, Mass. - Senior Phil
DiMarco (Bellingham, Mass.) capped of a wild non-league
baseball contest with a walk-off, two-run homerun to right field,
sending host Clark to an improbable 15-13 win over visiting
UMass-Boston on Tuesday afternoon on Granger Field.
Down by five runs after three innings, the Cougars pushed ten runs
across the board in the bottom of the third, highlighted by two-run
doubles from both Scott
Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) and Mitch
DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.). Leadoff hitter Stephen
DeMartino (East Haven, Conn.) collected two hits in
the third inning alone, including the 100th of his career.
Clark added a single run in the fourth and seemed to be in control
but the Beacons stayed within striking distance, registering three
runs in the top of the fifth and then tying the game with four more
in the top of the seventh capped by Tim Fontaine and his second
homerun of the day.
UMass-Boston regained the lead in the top of the ninth, when with
two outs, Ryan Walsh singled and then moved to third on a throwing
error by Cougar reliever Phil Bertocci (Thomaston,
Maine). He came around to score on a wild pitch, making the score,
13-12.
Clark plated a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth to send
the game to extra innings, when Jeremy
Gerber (Amherst, Mass.) recorded an infield single and
then advanced to third on two infield outs. He came around to knot
the game on a wild pitch, making the score 13-13.
After a scoreless top of the tenth for the Beacons, DeLorenzo led
off the inning for Clark and was hit by the pitch, setting the
stage for DiMarcos heroics.
Michael
Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.) picked up the win in
relief for Clark, tossing a 1-2-3 tenth inning to move to 2-0,
while UMass-Boston reliever Matt Young took the loss, tossing three
innings and allowing three runs.
Worcester native, Fontaine paced the Beacon offensive attack with
four hits and four RBI, while Walsh and Jeff Outzen each had three
hits.
Clark meanwhile, banged out 18 hits led by DeMartino,
Hollingsworth, DeLorenzo and Gerber who all collected three hits
apiece. Gerber also scored three runs and was a homerun shy of
hitting for the cycle.
The win for the Cougars moves their record to 15-15 overall with
one game left to play, while the Beacons now sit at 17-13.
Clark returns to the diamond on Thursday for a road trip at Daniel
Webster, while UMass-Boston visits Fitchburg State tomorrow.
