Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore Eleanor
Taylor registered four goals – including the game-winner a
little less than four minutes into overtime to catapult visiting
UMass-Dartmouth to a thrilling 4-3 win over Clark University in
field hockey action on Tuesday evening on Granger Field.
Trailing 2-0 at the start of the second half, Taylor scored four
of the game's next five goals to give the Corsairs their
first victory of the season.
The Cougars took an early lead thanks to the first collegiate
tally from freshman Talia Fish (Philadelphia, Pa.)
with help from Meghan Lennon (Charlton, Mass.) at
15:39.
Clark increased its lead when Mel Melkonian
(Worcester, Mass.) banged home a shot from out in front of the goal
at the 26:59 mark.
From that point on, however, it was Taylor who did most of the
scoring. Her first goal came courtesy of a penalty stroke at 53:21.
She was back on the board almost exactly a minute later when
Stephanie Kinchla set her up for the equalizer.
The Cougars answered back immediately as Melkonian fired a shot
that was saved but the rebound bounced right to Madeleine Lutts
(Salem, Mass.) who blasted a shot home for a 3-2 Clark
advantage.
Taylor wasn't done however, as she evened the score with a
little more than four minutes to go in regulation with help from
Mallie Lynch-Gilbert.
Things looked promising for Clark off the start of overtime as
Melkonian raced through the Corsair defense and fired a shot from
right to left that was just wide only 14 seconds into extra
time.
Taylor would end the contest less than four minutes later when
she drilled home the game winner at the 73:57 mark.
Clark netminder Kate McGrath (Arlington, Mass.)
turned back 12 shots for the Cougars, while UMD freshman goalie,
Kelsey Gallo made four stops.
The Cougars will look to get back into the win column on
Saturday when they visit Becker College beginning at 1 p.m., while
the Corsairs host Wheaton College in their home opener on
Thursday.
