Babson Park, Mass. – Sophomore forward Morgan Lockwood became just the sixth player in Babson College field hockey history to reach the 100 career point plateau as she scored five goals in a 6-1 victory over visiting Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup at MacDowell Field on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Beavers improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Cougars fell to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Tuesday's contest featured two of the nations' best offensive players, as Lockwood and the Beavers hosted Clark junior Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.). The Cougars' star forward had entered the game riding an incredible streak of five consecutive hat tricks while leading all of Division III with 20 goals and 43 points on the season. However, the matchup ended up being one-sided as Babson's combination of senior midfielder Kim Calhoun and senior goalie Jess Pashos helped hold Melkonian without a goal for the first time this season.

Both offensive stars had great scoring chances in the first four minutes of an action-packed first half. The Cougars' star broke free down the right side and ran in alone on Pashos, but the Beavers' veteran keeper made a tremendous charging save on the ensuing shot attempt less than two minutes in. Lockwood then got a clean look at the other end just moments later, but her shot hit the left post and was cleared by the Clark defense.

Lockwood scored the first of her five goals at 4:23, as she tipped sophomore Julia Pochini's shot from the top of the circle inside the left post for her 14th goal of the year.

 Clark then answered just over a minute later, as junior Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) converted a short-range shot off a long feed from classmate Amanda Mundt (Amherst, Mass.) for her seventh of the season at 5:28.

Babson regained the lead at the 11-minute mark, beginning when senior Anneliese Brosch had her shot from the top of the circle saved by Clark senior goalie Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.). Lockwood then gathered the rebound and tucked it into the cage for her second of the night..

The Cougars nearly tied it when Melkonian received an entry pass on a penalty corner and dribbled to the front of the cage. However, Pashos made another fantastic save to deny the nation's leading scorer.

The Beavers then made it 3-1 late in the period, as junior Kelly Walsh backhanded a shot around McGrath off a deflection in front for her second goal of the fall at 31:30.

After Babson took the two-goal advantage into the break, Lockwood pushed the lead to three goals at 35:41. Senior Courtney Weaving carried the ball down the left side and sent a cross from the end line to Lockwood, who one-timed it into the cage for her third goal of the game. It was the 42nd goal of her career, which along with her 16 assists gave her 100 total points midway through her second collegiate season.

Lockwood later added her fourth goal of the night when she took a short corner from Weaving on the right side and ripped a blast inside the near post at 54:37. She then converted a pass from senior Kristen Steigerwald at 64:38 for her school record-tying fifth goal of the night.

Clark had its chances in the second half, but Calhoun and Pashos played brilliantly to keep the Cougars at bay. Babson's senior keeper had another sliding stop on a Melkonian breakaway at 49:39, and she then punctuated the victory by making a spectacular diving save to her right on a Melkonian penalty stroke at 66:22.

Pashos finished with seven saves in the victory for Babson, while McGrath turned away six shots for Clark.

The Cougars, who see their seven-game winning streak come to an end, will look to start another streak when they visit Smith on Sunday.
