Box Score Paxton, Mass. – In what turned out to be another dominating offensive performance, visiting Clark outshot Anna Maria 34-3 on its way to a convincing 7-2 win in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday evening.
Leading the way for the Cougars was junior All-American Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.), who registered her fifth consecutive hat trick and now has 20 goals on the season – the most of any player in the nation.
Joining in on the scoring were Talia Fish (Philadelphia, Pa.), Erin Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.), Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) and Christabelle Kozlik (Emigrant, Mont.), as Clark ran its winning streak to seven straight games.
The AMCATS, meanwhile, have now dropped three consecutive contests and sit at 2-6 overall.
Melkonian put the Cougars ahead 2-0 with a pair of unassisted tallies in the first half and then Clark put some distance between themselves and Anna Maria over the next 25 minutes.
First it was Tessa Mazzeo (Lincoln Park, N.J.), who had two assists on the night - setting up Lutts for her sixth marker of the season.
After that it was Murphy banging home a loose ball on a scramble in front of the net for her third goal in the last five games.
Then it was Fish with help from Maureen Coakley (Worcester, Mass.) to make the game 5-0 with a little less than 20 minutes remaining.
Less than eight minutes later it was Melkonian again, registering her third goal of the game on an assist from Lutts.
Anna Maria answered with goals from Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) and Marybeth McClune (Worcester, Mass.) a little more than three minutes apart to make the score 6-2.
Clark followed those goals with Kozlik's first career marker at the 67:08 to finish out the scoring.
AMCAT netminder Marita Steinmetz (Grafton, Mass.) was outstanding in goal, turning back 17 shots, while Clark keeper Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) didn't make any saves in the win.
The Cougars, now 7-1 on the season, have a week off until they visit Babson – a team that has beaten them seven straight times dating back to the 2003 season.
