Box Score North Dartmouth, Mass. – Junior Mel Melkonian (Worcester, Mass.) scored a pair of goals – including the game-winning tally in overtime to lift visiting Clark to a thrilling 3-2 win over UMass-Dartmouth in non-league field hockey action on Thursday evening.
Melkonian's two markers give her 56 career goals and 130 career points – both new all-time marks in Clark school history, surpassing totals established by Laura Stuto (1989-92) and Jessica Petit (2000-03).
After falling behind 1-0 less than two minutes into the game, Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) got the Cougars on the board with her first goal of the season at 2:33.
Clark moved ahead at the 10:54 mark when Lutts setup Melkonian for the record-breaking goal, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
UMass-Dartmouth, who defeated Clark 4-3 in overtime on four goals from Eleanor Taylor last season, got the game-tying goal from Taylor midway through the second half.
Then with just 1:22 remaining in the first overtime period, Melkonian gathered a loose ball and snuck a shot past Corsairs sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Gallo for her second career overtime goal.
Clark outshot UMass Dartmouth, 19-14. Gallo made 11 saves for UMD, while Kate McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.) stopped five shots for the Cougars.
The Corsairs dropped to 0-2 with the loss, while Clark improved to 2-1 with the victory. The Scarlet and White will host Worcester-area rival Becker on Saturday.
