Cougars Drop Quarterfinal Matchup At Springfield

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – Fourth-seeded Springfield College got five goals from five different players and the host Pride pulled away for 5-1 win over fifth-seeded Clark University on Wednesday evening in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) quarterfinal field hockey action.

With the win, Springfield advances to Saturday's first semifinal against top seeded Babson College at 1:00 p.m.

The Cougars, meanwhile, see their six game winning streak as well as their season come to an end at 12-6.

Down 2-0 early in the second half, Clark cut the lead in half as Madeleine Lutts (Salem, Mass.) fed a wide open Kelly Hart (Oak Park, Ill.) to put the Cougars on the board at the 45 minute mark.

That assist for Lutts – her 15th of the season – sets a new single season school record, breaking the old mark of 14 set by Lisa Boyington during the 2000 season.

Springfield, however, tacked on three more goals a little more than11 minutes apart to secure the win. First, Kayla Sokol (West Brookfield, Mass.) scored unassisted at 55:43, and then Sokol set up both Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) and Libby Hart (Chatham, Mass.) at 64:33 and 68:55 respectively to break the game wide open.

For the game, the Pride held a 22-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-2 edge in the decisive second half. The Pride also took 17 penalty corners, compared to just eight for the visiting Cougars.

Springfield wasted little time netting the game's first goal, striking just 2:45 into the contest. After Liz Hurley's (Holden, Mass.) initial bid from seven yards out was kicked aside by Clark keeper Jordannah Saunders (Scarborough, Maine), Meg McHugh (Greenfield, Mass.) collected the ball on the right post and jammed in her ninth goal of the season.

The Pride tacked on its second goal of the opening half in the 18th minute. McHugh once again factored into the scoring, carrying the down right flank before blasting a centering pass past a sprawling Saunders. Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.) was left all alone and one-timed a shot empty net from five yards out to give the hosts a 2-0 lead heading into the half.

Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) ended the game with three saves to earn the victory, while Saunders posted eight stops in the loss.
