Cougars Swept Aside By Dutchmen

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winter Haven, Fla. – Playing in their first two games of the season, Union College looked like a group of seasoned veterans in posting a convincing doubleheader sweep over Clark University in Spring Break baseball on Thursday afternoon.

The Dutchmen recorded a 10-0 win in the opener and followed that up with a 9-1 triumph in the nightcap. David Peretti sparked the Union offense registering six RBI in the two games, backing up a pair of outstanding pitcher performances by Dutchmen hurlers.

In game one, Dane O'Neil pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits over seven innings while striking out six and walking three. David Peretti provided the offense for Union going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBI.

After a quick first inning for both squads, Clark threatened to break the scoring in the top of the second. Austin Knief (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Zachary Richall (Tyngsboro, Mass.) were able to reach base on singles. The Cougars eventually loaded the bases on a Daniel Lima (Manchester, Conn.) walk with just one out in the inning. However, O'Neil was able to get Michael Eglow (Delmar, N.Y.) to groundout to third and Mitch DeLorenzo (Berlin, Conn.) to strikeout looking to escape the jam.

Matt Barretto gave the Dutchmen their first run, as he was able to score Peretti in on a single to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Union tacked on more runs in the following inning as Peretti stroked a triple to right field, scoring Tyler Heck from first to cushion the lead. Vince Esposito then struck a ball to deep left field, allowing Peretti to tag from third to earn the sacrifice fly.

Leading 3-0 into the fifth inning, the Dutchmen continued to add onto their lead. Peretti and Esposito hit back-to-back RBI doubles, increasing the lead to five.

O'Neil continued to pitch well as he limited the Clark offense to just two hits in the final three innings.

In the second game of the afternoon, Union went ahead again in the third, as Peretti was able to strike a single to left center to bring around Dylan Katz-Wicks.

The Dutchmen were able to put up six runs in the sixth inning as Katz-Wicks, Heck, Peretti and Caruso all registered RBI in the inning.

Heck was able to break up five hits over seven innings in the complete game win, striking out seven while only conceding one walk.

The Cougars (2-5) will look to snap their four game slide when they take on Saint Vincent's (Pa.) on Friday morning at 9:15.
