Worcester, Mass. - Visiting Johnson & Wales
closed the game on an 18-6 run over the final 3:29 to turn a 57-50
deficit into a thrilling 68-63 win over host Clark University on
Monday evening at the Kneller Athletic Center.
The win for the Wildcats is their second straight, evening their
record at 2-2, while the Cougars have lost back-to-back games for
the second time this season and slip to 1-4.
With the game tied at 44 with a little less than ten minutes
remaining, Clark embarked on a 13-6 run to take a seven-point
lead.
In the run, the Cougars got six points from Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) and a key three-pointer from
sophomore Maggie Croft (Aurora, N.Y.).
After JWU trimmed the Clark lead to one at 58-57 following a
three-pointer from Morgan Wilson (LaGrangeville, N.J.), Alexia
Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) dropped in another Wildcat triple
giving the visitors the lead at 62-61 with 1:29 left.
The Cougars answered back with an inside finish from Camilleri, but
that was followed up with steal and finish from Ramirez, moving the
advantage back to the Wildcats with less than a minutes left.
Then, after a Clark timeout, Kate Minister
(Manchester, England) was setting up for the go ahead three, but
her shot was blocked by Katurah Andrews (Manchester, Conn.), who
hauled in the rebound, forcing the Cougars to foul.
Johnson & Wales connected on all four of its free throws to
seal the win - their second straight over Clark after having lost
the first seven games of the series.
Neither team mustered much offensive consistency in the first half,
as the Cougars had more turnovers (15) in the first 20 minutes than
baskets made (10). The Wildcats, meanwhile, suffered an almost
similar fate with turnovers (10) and made shots (11).
For the game both teams shot 33 percent from the field while facing
other deficiencies. Clark was doomed by its turnovers (29) and the
Wildcats struggled on the glass, getting outrebounded 59-39.
Johnson & Wales' Allyson Dowen finished with a game-high 25
points, five rebounds and four steals, while Ramirez added a
double-double with 18 points and 11 boards. Andrews had an
effective floor game, finishing with four points, eight rebounds,
four blocks and three steals.
Clark was paced by Ivori Aiken (Harlem, N.Y.), who
registered her fourth career double-double with 17 points and 10
rebounds, while Camilleri added 17 points and nine rebounds.
Minister stuffed the stat sheet with five points, eight rebounds, a
career-high seven assists and three blocks. Both Kelsey Giedymin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Croft added nine points
each.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, when they open NEWMAC
play with a home matchup with Wellesley, while JWU returns to the
hardwood on Wednesday as well when they travel to Rhode Island
College.
