Cougars Roar Back For Season-Ending 17-12 Win

Box Score

Middletown, Conn. - In the first meeting between Wesleyan and Clark on the baseball diamond in 11 years, the visiting Cougars came from behind twice, then broke an 11-11 tie in the top of the 10th by plating six run en route to a 17-12 victory.

Clark wraps up its 2011 season at 16-17, meaning over the past two full seasons, they are a combined 32-32 –the most wins over a two-year period in school history.

After coming back from a 6-0 deficit to grab an 8-7 lead, then make up a 10-8 shortfall to secure an 11-10 edge, Clark got things going in the decisive 10th inning as junior Matt Bohl (Amherst, Mass.) led off with a double to left center.  Senior Scott Hollingsworth (Tilton, N.H.) put down a bunt to move Bohl to third, but the throw to first base sailed into right field, allowing Bohl to score the go-ahead run and putting Hollingsworth at second.

Another sacrifice bunt resulted in another Cardinal error, allowing a second run to score. A third straight Wesleyan miscue on the next infield grounder put runners at second and third.

Consecutive RBI singles by juniors Shawn Lamothe (Bellingham, Mass.) and Nick Kellogg (Florence, Mass.) upped the margin to 15-11.

Clark added two more runs before the frame ended on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by senior Kevin Kopec Katonah, N.Y.). The Cougars collected 16 hits in the contest off of three Wesleyan pitchers.

Bohl and Nick Flemister (Pittsford, N.Y.) led the way with four hits apiece while each scored three runs.  Bohl had three RBI while Flemister had two.

Wesleyan had built a 6-0 lead after four innings, courtesy of a three-run homer from senior Derek Dettorre and a three–run double by sophomore Stefan Sundseth.  Clark plated four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to move ahead, 8-7.  Two Wesleyan errors led to three unearned runs in the fifth along with an infield RBI single by Bohl. Bohl had another RBI hit in the sixth while a Wesleyan mistake led to two more unearned runs. In total, nine Wesleyan errors allowed 12 unearned runs to score.

Wesleyan regained the advantage with three runs in its half of the sixth, as Sundseth smacked a run-scoring double and two other runs crossed the plate on bases-loaded walks. But Clark cut the lead to one in the seventh on an infield single by Flemister, scoring Kellogg, who led off with a single.

Two more Cougar runs in the eighth gave the visitors an 11-10 lead. Once again, Bohl had a RBI, plating junior Jeremy Gerber (Amherst, Mass.), who opened the inning with a double. Bohl eventually scored on another Cardinal error.

Wesleyan tied the game in the 8th on a walk to freshman Jimmy Hill, a single by senior Julian Sonnenfeld and an RBI groundout by senior Justin Freres. Sonnenfeld, Freres and Sundseth all had two hits for Wesleyan, which totaled nine.

Senior Benjamin Seel (Oakland, Maine) picked up the pitching victory in relief, going the final three innings and yielding three hits and two runs.  Hill took the loss for Wesleyan as he gave up eight hits in 4.2 innings but allowed just one earned run with eight strikeouts. Wesleyan pitchers amassed 16 strikeouts in the game as a group.
