McNamara was a Clark University men's basketball and baseball standout. Over his four-year basketball career McNamara scored 1,827 points, placing him second on the Clark men's basketball all-time scoring list. As a junior, McNamara finished third in the country in three-point shooting percentage at 47.4% going 91-for-192 in 28 games played. He was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Rookie of the year following his freshman season in 2000-01 and earned NEWMAC First-Team All-Conference recognition all four years. McNamara helped lead Clark to back-to-back Elite Eight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002. He finished his career as an Academic All-American with numerous regional honors.

In baseball, McNamara was a NEWMAC All-Conference First Team selection as a senior and graduated with the single-season RBI record at Clark (31). As a senior McNamara finished second in the NEWMAC in hitting (.387) and finished his career with over 100 hits. He served as a captain in both basketball and baseball during his senior year.
