Higginbottom, who passed away in 1977, was a four-year member of the baseball and men’s soccer team, and also a three-year member of the men’s basketball team. George was a 1930 graduate of Clark and a captain of both the baseball and soccer teams. Higginbottom was a focal point of the Cougars soccer offensive attack.
On campus, Higginbottom was an engaged student and a participant in many clubs. He was a chemistry major, member of the physics club, rope pull captain, member of the Clark Chemical Society, vice president for two years, class president for two years, and one of three brothers (along with Edwin and Arthur Higginbottom) who attended Clark.
Following his undergraduate degree in 1930 and a Chemistry Master’s degree in 1931, George taught Chemistry and Physics at Millbury High School. Moving on to Belmont High School subsequently, and to marriage and children by 1937, George was drafted into administrative positions: Assistant Principal in 1940, and Principal in 1944 from which he retired in 1968, after 24 years.Â
In his career, George served as President of both the Massachusetts Headmasters Association and the New England Association. He was a leader in education and in inter-scholastic athletic advocacy and policy.
